Building Parent-Educator Partnerships for Social and Emotional Development: Leading with Heart and Cultural Humility

Description

Parents are the primary teachers for children’s social and emotional development and yet have little if any support or tools to learn about how to manage this complicated lifelong role. Educators are also teaching children about social and emotional learning - often with many tools - but with limited connection to families' SEL approach which may vary greatly based on culture, background, and beliefs. Coming together to learn from differing perspectives and priorities may be key to children’s optimal social and emotional development. This Institute will offer an interactive dialogue on parents’ unique SEL strengths, responsibilities, and challenges, while providing strategies for supporting parents and linking their efforts with their children’s schools. Whether coming from a parent and/or a professional perspective, participants will leave with concrete goals and plans for culturally-responsive, authentic, and effective ways to engage across family and school contexts.

Speakers

Jennifer S. Miller, M.Ed. - Confident Parents, Confident Kids
Shannon Wanless - Office of Child Development, University of Pittsburgh

Effective Strategies for Systemic SEL Implementation Institute

Description

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is integral to high-quality PreK-12th-grade education. But how do schools and districts implement SEL systematically and create the conditions to support all students across all classrooms, in partnership with families and communities? Developed over more than a decade of collaboration with district partners in the Collaborating Districts Initiative, CASEL's framework for systemic SEL helps educators launch, sustain, and improve implementation. This day-long institute will introduce district- and school-level educators who are leading SEL implementation to this framework and share some of the highest-leverage resources, tools, and best practices from school systems across the nation. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage with CASEL resources, including the newly launched School Guide, assess their current implementation, develop an initial action plan for SEL, and receive consultation from CASEL experts.

This Pre-Conference Institute is presented by CASEL.

SEL + OST: Perfect Together?

Description

Social and emotional learning is happening every day in classrooms and school hallways across the country. Simultaneously, these skills are also being developed in the out-of-school time space. But what do we currently know about how OST can contribute to children’s social and emotional development? And what don't we know - but must know - to make progress? Join us for an engaging, inclusive conversation with field leaders, designed to highlight promising practices and identify opportunities and challenges to strengthening SEL in summer, afterschool and extended learning programs. Through panel discussions with industry experts and smaller group discussions, learn about the state of the field, probe critical questions and participate in a rich discussion on leveraging the power of SEL in OST. If you’re implementing (or thinking about implementing) OST in your system or school or exploring SEL + OST through a policy lens, this institute is for you.

This Pre-Conference Institute is presented by The Wallace Foundation and partners.
